Since it seems that my panties bunched up somewhere around my last post, and the whole story behind the reason my friends back home tease me about the snow/ice down here may have not been known before (I posted it in a reply to a darling who responded to my earlier post), I am going to post the reason here..
For those who happened to have seen it when I responded with it earlier, feel free to overlook:
*settles back in her rocking chair and lights up her pipe* See now.. It all started back in 2001: I was a fresh young thing; just moved to the state and settled in Douglasville during the third day of the year. Had heard the stories about the Ice Storm of 2000 that crippled the state for almost 2 weeks. *takes a puff on her pipe* Didn't think it could have been all that bad.. See, I'd grown up on Long Island Snow/Ice during the winter was a way of Life, I tell you!
Then, one day, it snowed.. About a good 6 inches or so, and was still coming down. Nothing to get yer britches up and in a twist over, you know? But Atlanta? Shut. Down. I, of course, hadn't realized this (I had no clue at the time why Atlanta would have shut down over 6 inches *shrug*), and drove to work. Without a hitch, mind you.. Well, I made it in to work - was one of the managers at the Blockbuster up the street from my apartment *nods slowly* - and had just shut the door behind me when the phone rang. Was my assistant general manager who called cause she and the general manager just knew I'd come in, and were wonderin' why the hell I was in the store when everything was closed because of the blizzard. "What blizzard?" I asked. "It's just a bit of snow out." I think it took her a moment or two before she could reply, but she'd finally gotten across to me to close up shop and head home (adding a small bit about 'Damned Yankees' *grin*).
Anyways, I made it back to my place, then had the smart idea to take my camera, go back outside, and take pics of this 'blizzard' to email to my folks back home. I drove around a bit taking pics, and noticed that I-20 was a complete standstill from my exit off to the horizon (found out later there was a major pile-up from a small ways to my exit to practically the Alabama border *shudder*). I took all the pics I could, then emailed them off. Next thing I know, I'm getting all these responses from my friends and family, in various stages of disbelief, mind you, about "How the hell could 6 inches of snow shut down almost a whole state??"
And now every time they hear about any weather resembling snow/ice occurring down here, I get the phone calls.. *puffs on her pipe*
Neanderthals, I tell you..

Date: 2008-01-17 02:50 am (UTC)Haahaa they shut every bridge down because of the ice.... They had tried salt, but the freezing rain ended up washing it away and they couldn't figure out that putting SAND on it would have a decent effect. Hmm... Desert, of course there's no sand. Nope, none at all!

I Very Much Enjoyed The Story, but . . .
Date: 2008-01-17 05:30 am (UTC)In the north you get snow EVERY year, and for months at a time. Georgia is lucky to get snow flerries every year.
In the north you get mostly snow and little ice {or sub freezing days on end}. In Georgia we get very little snow if any and lots of ice. Plus it is more than likly going to worm up the next day and refreeze at night, rinse and repeat.
In the north you have these machines called snow plows, that move massive amounts of snow. I remember when Atlanta got there first snow plow. I think they are stillusing it, it is used so much. {NOT!}
I love SNOW, I hate ICE. This is just my two cents worth.
Love & HUGZ!

Date: 2008-01-17 06:17 am (UTC)At the time, back during that winter, of course it seemed so weird to me that Atlanta couldn't handle snow. I'd just arrived from an area that could deal with several feet of snow a year if necessary, yet, I'm in a place that gets 3-6 inches of snow, and then has some nasty ice, and everything shuts down.
I learned everything you just explained to me later on that month. I grok it. Believe me. We don't have to re-educate me on that bit. I promise. I get it.
What I did not appreciate was the tone of the reply that ended up with me posting this entry. My friends are teasing me, not looking down on people here and thinking that all Georgia needs to do is set up a budget to get snowplows or whatever. They had their questions as well before, yes, and I relayed to them all the info I learned down here concerning Georgia, snow, and ice. No one needs to add up any city's budget, and for damned sure no one is going to tell me or my friends that they can't call me up and make the comments they did (I'm not saying that you did, but you read what I meant, yes?).
I hear more disparaging remarks from the natives of this state about how Georgia handles this type of weather than I have ever had from anyone up north. Hence the original post in the first place. Is anyone going to tell them to do the city budget math? And just the comment "Wonder how they'd like to go without those salters for a season." was downright not called for.
