[14:54] Zorathenne: waaah they have a slightly dif version of oranges and lemons.. i like the orig better.
[14:54] Zorathenne: if i remember right its a song from england that helps the children learn and remember the names of the bells in various old cathedrals and stuff
[14:55] Zorathenne: and the last line is in reference to one of the old kings who had a penchant for using the guillotine..
[14:55] Zorathenne: a lot
[14:58] Zorathenne: ('singing' the original version) Oranges and lemons, Say the bells of St. Clements. I owe you five farthings, say the bells of St. Martins. When will you pay me? Say the bells at Old Bailey. When I am rich, say the bells at Shoreditch. When will that be? Say the bells of Stepney. I do not know, says the great bell of Bow. Here comes a candle to light you to bed, and here comes a chopper to chop off your head..
[14:58] justaguycalledv: Cute.
[14:58] Zorathenne: chop chop chop, chop chop chop, chop chop chop, CHOP!
[14:58] Zorathenne: yeah, real cute *giggle*

What songs of your childhood do you remember?

List of the ones poor [livejournal.com profile] vernard got to see me giddily type in his general direction (I'll give the lyrics later if people want to compare them - some regions have slightly different lyrics for songs as I found out):

Kookaburra

I Love the Mountains

Peanut Butter and Jelly

Oranges and Lemons

Senor Don Gato

Oh there are tons more that I grew up singing, but those are among the top of my list. What are yours?

Bend and stretch! Reach for the stars! There goes Mercury, there goes Mars!--I'm not sure of the title of that one.

Bend and stretch, reach for the stars.
There goes Jupiter, here comes Mars.
Bend and stretch, reach for the sky
Stand on tip-e-toe, oh! so high!

If memory serves, that one is from an early version of Romper Room, circa 1958. Lady A was a *very* small girl at the time.

Hee! I remember Romper Room! One time, when the lady was looking through her mirror, as she was calling out the names of the children, she said my name (it was probably for a Melody, but Melodee sounds exactly the same *grin*), and it.. freaked me out, to say the least. I think The Mom had to explain to me (after calming me down), that some kids write in to the show and make a request of her to call out their names. But talk about an odd moment *grin*!

I watched Romper Room sometimes, but my favorite was Captain Kangaroo.

I never had Romper Stompers. I had a deprived childhood.

Germs, My Invisible dog

My very best friend is my little shaggy dog,
Chewing on my tennis shoes and running through the hall.
He's kinda like my shadow 'cause he's everywhere I go,

Chorus:
I hide him in my pocket 'cause he's very very small,
Germs, Germs my invisible dog.

He runs like the wind, and he knows some funny tricks
He doesn't like carrots, and spinach makes him sick
He likes cotton candy, and purple lemonade
Oreo Cookies, and yellow gatorate.

Chorus

We ride our ponies to castles far away,
Chasing phony dinosaurs and dragons on the way.
We often go exploring where the river winds and bends
Acting like Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn.

Chorus

I take him to church, but nobody ever sees,
the little shaggy puppy dog, sittin' on my knees
He's loves Bible verses and he's learning a new song
But he often falls asleep when the sermon is too long.

Chorus

Wind of the Western Sea

Sweet and low sweet and low Wind of the Western Sea
Blow, blow, breathe and blow Wind of the Western Sea

Over the rolling waters blow
Come from the dying moon and blow
Blow him again to me while my little one
While my pretty one sleeps

Sleep and rest Sleep and rest
Father will come to me soon
Rest, rest on mother's breast
Father will come to me soon

Father will come to his babe in the nest
Silver sails come out of the west
Under the silver moon sleep my little one
Sleep my pretty one Sleep

and~

All Through the Night

Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones' vigil keeping,
All through the night

Angels watching, e'er around thee,
All through the night
Midnight slumber close surround thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones' watch am keeping,
All through the night

[livejournal.com profile] your_mother sang this to me and [livejournal.com profile] dwivian when we were children. It always gets me when I hear it.

I walk through the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And he walks with me and he talks with me
And he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

There are two more verses, but I won't bore you.
